Lacey Sturm, lead singer of alternative Christian rock group Flyleaf, is known for her powerful vocals and deeply emotional performances. Some of her most notable songs include Fully Alive, I’m So Sick, All Around Me, Awaken Love, Darkness Before Dawn, and the personal favorite Circle.

With chart-breaking success, it all wouldn’t have happened without a divine intervention.

A Life at the Breaking Point

“When I was 16 years old, I planned to commit suicide because life was just too heavy. It was just too much for me. I was an atheist who…who had been through a lot of hurt and who’s been hurt by a lot of people and was really self-centered and selfish. And all I thought about was my own pain and I couldn’t get out of it. And finally I just decided that I didn’t want to keep doing life anymore.”

The day that Lacey planned to commit suicide, she came home from school having a nervous breakdown. It was her grandmother, who she credited to God, who discerned that something was off about Lacey. That’s when her grandmother offered her to go to church.

Lacey was very turned off to the idea of being around other Christians. She didn’t like being around people mentioning the word Jesus as they spew hateful speech about what is and isn’t acceptable in the eyes of the Lord.

After the constant ask, Lacey finally gave into her grandmother’s request to go to church.

Divine Suicide Intervention

As she eagerly waited for the service to be over so that she could get back into schedule to commit suicide that very night, the preacher started to catch her attention. The preacher was speaking about the pain people experience in their lives and seemed to describe her whole story at the pulpit.

“I was getting kind of weird out,” Lacey said as she testified at a concert show.

Then suddenly, the southern preacher started crying, which caught her attention.

The preacher shockingly says,

“There’s a suicidal spirit in the room.”

This chilling revelation peeked Lacey's attention as the preacher begged for the unknown person to come forth for prayer.

The preacher continues,

“God has a plan for your life and I know that you don’t understand why there’s so much pain in your heart but God made you. And he made you to be connected with him. He made you so that he could love you ... .so you can experience a life like you’ve never known before in him.”

Lacey admitted that she had too much pride to step forward. She didn’t want to admit in front of Christians that she had problems, despite the tears coming down her eyes.

So she made her exit until she saw an old man standing at the door. He also was crying too.

The old man said to Lacey,

“The Lord wants me to speak to you and He said He knows the pain in your heart. He’s seen you cry yourself to sleep at night and He died to take that pain out of your heart. He experienced it while he was on the cross so you don’t have to keep holding it there anymore.”

He continued to speak on things that shock her mind before offering prayer to 16 year old Lacey. Finally giving in by how much love she felt in that moment, the man prayed over her.

“It felt like God of the universe shown up and I saw that I was sinful. I saw that there was this perfect holy loving God who was right in front me… Why does he care about me. I don’t know… He’s just standing there and I just feel like God’s saying [and] showing me who I am. All the love I thought I had was selfish.”

God revealed to her all things in her life that needed to change. Whether it was to stop sleeping with her boyfriend or start to love unconditionally. Yet at the same time, God had her wrap up, wanting to make Lacey new. .

Lacey woke up that very next day. She didn’t die. She was reborn.

Lacey would later become the front singer of the 2000s Christian Rock band known as Flyleaf before going solo.

She didn’t think she would become a rock singer but God had different plans. Lacey continues to make music present day and is very vocal about her testimony with Jesus Christ.
