Childhood: Growing Up in Brokenness
Born on November 19, 1986, in Bushwick, Brooklyn, New York, Jeannie Ortega-Law grew up in a home surrounded by spiritual darkness and instability.
Of Puerto Rican descent, she later shared that there was a battle over her life before she was even born. Although her parents initially were not interested in having children, they ultimately chose life.
Instead of growing up in a Christian home, Jeannie's family actively practiced Santeria, participating in occult rituals including animal sacrifices and mock baptisms. Alcohol addiction also plagued the household while the surrounding neighborhood was filled with violence and chaos.
Despite these circumstances, God was already planting seeds of hope.
Jeannie occasionally attended Metro World Child, where she was introduced to prayer and God's love.
“I didn’t even know I was going to church or Sunday school or anything. I just knew this felt nice and it felt good and it was teaching me that I should pray. So, I’m going to pray. Sometimes I will pray.”

Even while struggling with suicidal ideation between the ages of 7 and 11, she continued praying.
Hope became stronger than the brokenness surrounding her.
Discovering Music and a Dream
Around the age of nine, Jeannie discovered a passion for singing.
She has shared that a Mariah Carey song gave her hope during one of the darkest seasons of her childhood, inspiring her to use music to help others.
By age 13, an unexpected encounter changed everything. A taxi driver connected to the music industry discovered her talent, leading to artist development with a professional manager over several years. Her very first original song earned her a recording contract with Hollywood Records in 2002.
Rising to Fame
Jeannie's career quickly gained momentum.
She appeared on the soundtrack for Love Don't Cost a Thing with "Got What It Takes" and was featured on Disney Channel's That's So Raven with "Future Is Clear."
In October 2005, she released her debut single "It's R Time," which later appeared on the Freedom Writers soundtrack in 2007.
On September 12, 2006, her debut album No Place Like BKLYN was released, further establishing her presence in pop music.
Her career also included touring as an opening act for Rihanna before joining the Lo Máximo de la Música National Tour alongside Frankie J, Luis Fonsi, and Nina Sky.From the outside, everything looked successful. Inside, however, something was missing.
Becoming a Product Instead of Living with Purpose
As a teenager, Jeannie entered the music industry hoping to inspire people through music. Over time, the demands of fame slowly changed that mission.
“And I totally forgot my purpose. I became a product."
Success couldn't satisfy the emptiness she felt. The money, celebrity lifestyle, and relationships offered no lasting peace.
Encountering the Presence of God
During the height of her career, a high school friend invited her to church. Feeling emotionally numb, Jeannie accepted simply because she had a "why not?" attitude.
Between the ages of 17 and 19, she slowly learned what it meant to have a relationship with God while wrestling with the pressures of fame. Then everything changed.
At age 19, while attending a church service after considering running away from her family, she encountered the tangible presence of God.
“But I felt this overwhelming sensation in my heart that it felt like it was going to explode. And I began to weep. I was not churched. I didn’t know what was going on but I knew that God was there. I was knew that in that very moment, I was being confronted by pure love. There wasn’t a person standing in front of me. I just had this overwhelming sensation and I knew it was the tangible presence of the living God.”
She recognized something completely different from everything she had previously experienced. She knew what fame felt like. She knew what demonic oppression felt like.
But she also knew that this was the holy presence of God. The Lord immediately began speaking to her about her family, and she spent six hours weeping under a peace that surpassed all understanding.
Following Jesus While Still in the Music Industry
Although Jeannie had genuinely given her life to Christ, discipleship wasn't easy. Many people at the church she attended viewed her as worldly because of her fame and the type of music she performed. Still, she faithfully attended church and pursued Jesus.
For several years, her walk with God became a personal journey.
“And so for five years, it was my own journey. I would go to the church and I was diligent about [my faith]. I literally would be in the club the night before doing a concert half naked cursing everywhere and anyway you could. Seriously telling people at the very end of the show, did you know God is real? Put God first. The next morning go to church because I wanted to learn more about this Jesus that I was falling in love with.”
As she continued growing spiritually, the Holy Spirit began convicting her about her lifestyle.
Her speech changed. Her clothing changed. Her priorities changed. She surrendered more and more of her life to Christ.
Dropped by Hollywood Records
Her transformation eventually caught the attention of her record label.Instead of celebrating the change, Hollywood Records ended their partnership.
“The label said, ‘We didn’t sign a Christian girl. We signed a bad girl from Brooklyn.’”
Everything she had built appeared to collapse. Yet it became the very moment she fully surrendered her dreams and future to God. What seemed like a devastating loss became the beginning of a brand-new life.
Living for Christ Today
Today, Jeannie Ortega-Law uses the gifts God gave her to glorify Jesus Christ.
Alongside her husband, she ministers through music, preaching, and sharing the Gospel around the world. Her story reminds us that no amount of fame, success, or recognition can replace a relationship with God. True peace isn't found in popularity. True purpose isn't found in career achievements.
True peace is found in Christ.
